Product Description

Cavaso is the area of Italy that John and Emma Salvestrin immigrated from in 1932 when they bought Dr. Crane vineyard from the Crane family. Cavaso del Tomba is a commune with about 3000 inhabitants in the province of Treviso, Veneto, north-eastern Italy. The municipality of Cavaso is spread over the southern flank of the buttress that extends from Monte Grappa towards the Piave River.

The 2014 Salvestrin Cavaso Red Blend was a family favorite that was served at family gatherings and never to the public. The first bottled vintage is the 2014 and was bottled in just 2014 and 2015. Its grapes are “traded” grapes from neighboring Italian immigrant families in Napa with the two prominent varietals of Merlot coming from the Salvestrin vineyard and Syrah from the Nichelini Family, the oldest family-owned winery in Napa.

The beautiful ruby color leads to floral notes that are vibrantly reminiscent of rose petals. On the palate, a soft silky-smooth entry shows ripe red and dark fruit. The fruit hangs on through the well-integrated tannin and lingers delightfully along with hints of barrel spice.

The vineyard at Salvestrin has been farmed sustainably for over eighty years, with holistic guidelines in place since 2006. Fruit trees planted around the property provide a habitat for beneficial insects. Nutrient composts and cover crops increase the biodiversity of the soil and improve tilth. Soil cultivation in the spring aids in achieving vine balance and decreases the need for irrigation. The vineyard at Salvestrin is certified Napa Green for both winery and vineyard and has fish friendly farming practices.

Environmentally friendly practices are implemented in the winery at Salvestrin as well. From conserving water to limited overall power usage, the team at Salvestrin is committed to sustainability. Purchasing recycled materials, close monitoring of energy and water use, and limiting waste allow the wine cellar to not only run more environmentally friendly but also more efficiently.
