Product Description

Finely carved Avian Axe God made from a verdant green jade with elegant black inclusions from the Guanacaste/Nicoya region of Costa Rica.

The lower section is a nice celt form, the upper section represents a perky bird denizen of the Costa Rican rainforest with a delicately delineated beak, striated bands mid-beak, incised crest feathers, and jutting claws and feet below the beak. Laterally drilled behind the beak, this piece can be worn as a pendant.

The name "axe god" comes from the form of the pendant, which replicates the shape of the traditional stone chopping tool. While most are anthropomorphic, some represent animals or supernatural beings. In the Pre-Columbian World, birds were regarded as animals of the celestial realm that served as messengers between humankind and their deities.
