Picnic was an immediate success when the series originally launched in the radical 1960s. Contempt prevailed for the bourgeois demand for large tableware sets; people preferred to drink straight from the bottle or from simple drinking glasses like these.

Bertil Vallien, Picnic's designer, is Sweden’s most acclaimed glass artist; he has won an array of awards and his work is richly represented at museums worldwide. He works with a mythical, dreamy and symbolic world of motifs and runs what he describes as a research project in close partnership with his team, many of whom have worked closely with Bertil for decades.
