Confederate $ 50 Bond May 1, 1861 # 7058
Product Description
This is a beautiful example of a Confederate $ 50 Bond. This bond was issued by the ‘CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA” (CSA). This bond was issued on May 1, 1861. This bond has the serial number 7058. This is one of the earliest CSA bonds issued in Montgomery, Alabama.
The bond has been professionally framed and matted in a solid oak frame that measures 21 3/4” x 18 3/4”. The frame alone cost $ 350.
This is history in your hands here!
The bond still has 17 of the original 20 coupons attached on the bottom of the bond. When the date printed on the coupon arrived, you could cash it in for your interest payment, if the Confederacy had won the “War between the States”.
What is really cool is the coupons are dated:
September 1, 1863, through 1870 and March 1, 1864 through 1871.
The 3 coupons that were redeemed were dated March 1, 1863, and September 1, 1862, and March 1, 1862. These were redeemed during the war. The bearer of this bond could have also redeemed another 4 coupons, but for some reason they didn’t.
The bond features vignettes representing Commerce and Agriculture. It was lithographed by the then famous company of Douglas Engr. Of New Orleans.
It is hand signed and numbered by the Confederate Government. When the Confederacy seceded from the Union, the immediate concern was the need to raise revenue through borrowing, taxation, and printing currency.
The Confederate government turned to issuing bonds and printing currency to generate the revenue needed to fund the war effort.
