Confederate $ 1000 Bond February 20, 1863 # 12930
Product Description
This is a beautiful example of a Confederate $ 1000 Bond. This bond was issued by the ‘CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA”. The bond states “LOAN AUTHORIZED BY ACT OF CONGRESS APROVED ON APRIL 30, 1863. This bond has the serial number 12930. The bond carries an interest rate of eight percent. It was issued on March 2, 1863.
This is history in your hands here!
The bond has been professionally framed and matted in a solid oak frame that measures 20.5” x 19”. The frame alone cost $ 350.
The bond still has 7 of the original coupons attached on the bottom of the bond. When the date printed on the coupon arrived, you could cash it in for your interest payment, if the Confederacy had won the “War between the States”.
What is really cool is the coupons are dated:
July 1st 1865, 1866, 1867, and 1868 and Jan 1st 1866, 1867, and 1868.
The bond features Confederate President Jefferson Davis on the top left. On the top right is the City of Richmond. It was lithographed by the then famous company of Evans & Cogswell of Columbia, South Carolina. The note has the watermark “CANSELL” and the date of “1863” in the paper.
It is hand signed and numbered by the Confederate Government. When the Confederacy seceded from the Union, the immediate concern was the need to raise revenue through borrowing, taxation, and printing currency.
The Confederate government turned to issuing bonds and printing currency to generate the revenue needed to fund the war effort.
