Product Description

Up for sale is a beautiful example of an American Buffalo Silver Dollar First Day of Issue Commemorative coin set. The set includes an American Buffalo Silver Dollar commemorative coin and a 1937 S (San Francisco) Buffalo Nickel. The actual real buffalo used for the nickel was named “Black Diamond”. This is a unique and hard to find set of coins in the original packaging in this condition.

This set also has the official “triple” cancelation from June 7, 2001, as well as an $ .80 Pan American Exposition buffalo commemorative stamp created by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The unique diamond shaped postage stamp is inspired by advertising labels used to publicize the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, NY.

This 2001-D American Buffalo uncirculated silver dollar First Day of Issue (FDOI) commemorative coin (and stamp) has a cover by Fleetwood of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

It appears, Fleetwood used Buffalo nickels with various dates from the 1930's. This particular set contains a 1937 S (San Francisco). These coins are permanently sealed with both coins in a rigid insert for protection and cover placement. The graceful and beautiful, multi-colored, two-sided printing was inspired by an original painting entitled "Indians Hunting Buffalo" by Russian painter Ivan Akimovich Sushchenko.

The coin commemorates the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian. The design recreates the famous Buffalo Nickel minted from 1913 to 1938. That design features two American icons: a Native American profile and an American buffalo. Three different Native Americans – Chief Iron Tail, Chief Big Tree, and Chief Two Moons – modeled for Fraser for the coin.

The fate of the American Buffalo – or bison – was linked to the fate of the Native American, and vice versa. Native Americans hunted the bison and used the carcass for everything from shelter and food to needles and cooking implements—they were known for wasting nothing.
