Yes, this camera needs to be plugged into work. It has a built-in battery, but the battery capacity is around 15 mins. It's suggested that you use the car charger to plug in the cigarette lighter for power supply.

if the camera has to be plugged in to work, how does it turn on when your not in the car and it senses a vibration?

For parking guard, the camera will automatically turn on and record when there is collision or vibration. If you prefer long time monitoring during parking, you should use a hardwire kit for the power supply.
